Breve biografia
Helen McCloy was born in New York City. Her parents were writer Helen Worrell McCloy and her husband William McCloy, the longtime managing editor of the New York Evening Sun. Helen attended Brooklyn's Quaker Friend's School and in 1923, went to France to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. She got a job as a correspondent for Hearst's Universal News Service in 1927, then became an art critic for International Studio and other magazines, as well as a freelance contributor to London's Morning Post and Parnassus. She returned to the USA in 1932 and published her debut mystery novel, Dance of Death, in 1938. It introduced the character of psychiatrist-detective Dr. Basil Willing, who is not a traditional psychoanalyst but a scientist more interested in what people perceive and think. He appeared in 13 of her novels. Some of her books were published under the pen name Helen Clarkson. In 1946, she married Davis Dressler, author of the Mike Shayne detective novels under the pseudonym Brett Halliday. With Dressler, she founded the Torquil Publishing Company and a literary agency called Halliday and McCloy, before their divorce in 1961. In 1950, she became the first woman to serve as president of the Mystery Writers of America. In 1953, she received an Edgar Award for her literary criticism, and in 1990, was named a Grand Master.

I didn’t have high hopes going in, but this was a very enjoyable book! Set during the war, but in very different circumstances than a normal war story. Full of interesting tidbits about a variety of topics making this a very entertaining read...think I might try to pick up some of the other Willing novels.

Good. window into girls schools on 1940s. Dr. Basil Wintersomething .. psychaitrist brought in to figure things out. All about lead waifish character with an apparent doppleganger causing murder and mischief! overwrought stylistically also a window into old fashioned ladies writing. still... would read more if i could get them easy- but they're expensive- this one was an ILL.

In New York, Debutante Kitty Jocelyn is found dead one morning, in a snow bank, killed by heat stroke. But how is that possible when she was seen at her own party until early in the morning and has not been reported missing, and in winter. Assistant Chief Inspector Patrick Foyle investigates with the help of psychologist Dr. Basil Willing.
An entertaining well-written golden age mystery. A good start to a new series with a likeable main character.

Dr Roger Slater has developed a new 'truth drug' which he believes friend and socialite Claudia Bethune has stolen a sample because she believes that it would be fun to use on her house guests at Blessingbourne. Dr Basil Willing is her tenant for the season, and investigates the aftermath of the dinner party with the aid of the local police.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its cast of varied characters. A good addition to the series which can easily be read as a standalone story.
