Book title and author: 100 words every high school freshman should know / by the editors of the American heritage dictionaries

Why I picked this book up: I used to have a great vocabulary and when I was in grad schoolI kept losing words when talking and I remember telling my wife, “This is starting to worry me, maybe I have a brain tumor.“ It turned out I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I recently downloaded a vocabulary app to practice words but it costed money when I started using it so I decided to buy this book.

Thoughts: Freshmen encounter many new things in high school -- new teachers, new friends, new subjects, new responsibilities -- and all are important to personal growth and success. But among the most challenging of these new experiences is the rapid growth of vocabulary, which will become increasingly sophisticated and complex in the years ahead. The best way to start high school is to be well prepared, and what better way to prepare than to have a varied and versatile vocabulary? To help students get a head start on high school, the editors of The American Heritage College Dictionary, Fourth Edition assembled this book of 100 words every high school freshman should know. Designed in line with the best-selling 100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know, this book presents a number of words that a successful middle school graduate can learn from rigorous coursework in a variety of subjects. The words present challenges of spelling, meaning, and usage. They are words that students will see regularly both in their high school reading and in their later entry into the adult world. To learn them is to step into a broader world.

Why I finished this read: I have not finished it yet. It is a work in progress and see it as a good thing to exercise my brain. This book is only 100 words and will be easy to finish.

Stars rating: 5 of 5 stars because I am thankful for the refresher.

Another in the series.

This one was interesting more to see things I hadn't quite pieced together as being problematic. I only had three things that stood out to me and now I've got them down. But I loved the time spent wandering through it. Looking at where words came from and some of the quotes of people using the words, or misusing the words previously.

Another in the series (as I purchase six of the eight with my Amazon birthday money, so there'll be a few more I'm going to pop up). Not as many new ones to learn in this one, but definitely a good book for people looking to expand their vocabulary.
