Very informative, well researched and fascinating look at the Queens of Blues in the 1920s, but it begins with the the organization of TOBA, formed in 1909 in Memphis by Anselmo Barasso. It scheduled black acts for theater and vaudeville, many referred to as the Toby Circuit, and was rumored to treat its artists poorly. Soon record labels began forming and releasing the records of talented black women. Sippie Wallace, Victoria Spivey,Edith Wilson, and Alberta Hunter to name a few.
This ia a comprehensive and intimate, at times.
I loved this, its a good look at the women of blues but also the pain and heartache they endured, as well as their life stories.
Highly Recommended
