Shelley Shepard Gray

I was impressed with the tough issues this author was willing to tackle in this fictional novel. I thought she handled the mentions of abuse in a past relationship with sensitivity and did a good job highlighting some of the struggles women in violent domestic situations can face. It was also interesting to read how this was particularly handled in an Amish community, which added a layer of complexity to the story. I really liked Seth. He is a great example of someone who is not perfect but who used his past to learn and grow. The story is filled with spiritual truths and easily kept my attention. Despite some hard struggles, the story ends with hope and it is well worth the read!

Unforgiven, by Shelley Shepard Gray, is a heartwarming story. I enjoyed how well written and easy to imagine this story is. As Tabitha is basically hidden away in her home after her divorce, Seth is there helping her with providing wood and food. I enjoyed their characters a lot, they are both strong and caring people. I like how Tabitha uses her crafts to make a living and helps others out as well.

I enjoyed this story. It is interesting to read of how people thought of Tabitha after her divorce and Seth after his prison sentence. Both were formally Amish and just the act of trying to stay alive was looked down on. I enjoyed how Seth’s sister still looked up to him and how she struggled gaining her parent’s approval of her boyfriend. The story shows how Tabitha and Seth pay the price for what has been done to them. It is interesting to see how Tabitha’s brother in law has limited the time her sister can spend with her. This story does touch on physical abuse in a relationship.

I thoroughly enjoyed this inspirational tale of second chances. Most of the Amish fiction I read tends to portray only the devout and practicing Amish. Unforgiven focuses on a woman who was shunned for divorcing her husband and an Amish man who went to prison and is unbaptized. Seth Zimmerman went to prison for accidentally murdering an Amish man who was assaulting a woman. Tabitha Yoder was a young woman who married a monster. She was physically and emotionally abused constantly, but she left her husband for good after he beat her so bad she miscarried their baby. These two outcasts find they have a lot in common and start to grow closer. A slow burn with lots of interesting side stories and characters. I was rooting for Seth and Tabitha the whole way!… (altro)

I requested to read and review this book through the Revell Reads program. All thoughts are fully my own and freely given.

I chose to review this book because I have enjoyed reading other books by Shelley Shepard Gray. This book was a bit disappointing. It seemed rather shallow to me. The characters were not fully developed and there wasn't much depth to them.

The storyline was fine. It flowed well and it was something that could have happened. The story kept my interest but seemed to end too quickly.

I give this a solid 3 out of 5-star rating and would recommend… (altro)
