Set in Athena, Mississippi, with librarian Charlie Harris and his Maine Coon cat, Diesel. Charlie walks Diesel on a leash and takes him almost everywhere he goes including in part-time archivist job at Athena College In this first installment, Gregory Priest, alumni of Athena College, returns to Athena to donate his manuscripts and meet his son Jason Wardlaw. He is a best-selling author who was a jerk in high school and college. Charlie had gone through both with him and was not a fan of this self-centered person. Charlie's daughter, Laura, is home for the summer teaching at the local college. She's come at the request of her ex-fiancé, who is an unpleasant character who subsequently gets himself killed. There are all kinds of suspects but the truth ends up coming out of left field a bit. One thing the first three books in this series share is multiple secrets revealed which confuse the motive of the killer and keep the suspense going.

Charlie gets invited to help inventory a collection of priceless first editions - the catch being that the owner is part of your stereotypical wealthy family full of entitled jerks and thieves. Of course the owner turns up dead. In this edition Charlie's son Sean has moved home so we've got a wider set of recurring characters (Charlie, his cat, the housekeeper, the boarder, the sheriff). There's a nice twist in the tale at the end.

Charlie is a widower with a Maine Coon cat who works part time as an archiver in a library. His high school rival comes into town and promptly gets murdered - but who did it and why? There are secrets (of course) and Charlie gets involved because his 18 yr old boarder is the one to find the body. It's a nice, quiet, cozy mystery.
