- Mária Anna Borbás was born in Budapest, Hunagary, to Julianna (Köves) and Pál Borbás. Between 1948 and 1953, she was a student in Hungarian and French at Eötvös Loránd University ELTE BTK. In 1953-1954, she was the editor of Szépirodalmi Könyvkiadó. Between 1955 and 1995, she worked as the editor of Új Magyar Könyvkiadó and, as a continuation, of Európa Könyvkiadó. Between 1956 and 1961, she also completed the English course at ELTE BTK. She was a writer, publishing editor, and prize-winning literary translator of works by Jane Austen, Doris Lessing, Herman Melville, Gerald Durrell, Virginia Woolf, A.A. Milne, Raymond Chandler, and Emily Brontë, among others.
