This book was great although I listened to the audio version and I felt that the narrator sounded too young for the main character. Putting that aside, the book was a really a good psychological thriller. The main character, Juliet, is a psychotherapist. I think she is a bit naive but very personable and someone is trying to drive her over the edge. All the characters are well developed and the story flowed very well with the tension building as Juliet is tortured by the serial killer (mentally not physically) but she isn't sure that the mental anguish is any better than if it would be physical abuse.

Bodies are showing up with her old clothes or mementos. There are no clues as to who the murderer is or what the motive is as far as Juliet knows she has no enemies. Except there is one........... ( )

Started on November 24, 2013.
Got this for free during a promotion at Amazon.De.
Reads more like a romance novel than a thriller.
So far light reading and interesting, but no real page-turner.
OK, but I am not sure wether I should read the next book in the series.
As it takes place in the UK, mildly interesting. And some not so often mentioned parts of London in this book.
Would prefer it to read about some other part of the UK.
For a romance novel recommended, not as a crime novel nor thriller.

A. J. Waines is a new author for me but after reading The Evil Beneath I will definitely be checking out her other titles.
As a fan of murder mysteries and romantic thrillers, The Evil Beneath did not disappoint. It was exciting and tense right from the beginning where Juliet got a strange text telling her to go to Hammersmith Bridge. After finding a dead body the creepiness didn't end there as she receives more anonymous texts and the body count begins to climb. On top of this, Juliet is seeing patients in her own home which adds to the tension and danger factor. She also has an alcoholic ex-boyfriend who may or may not be connected to the murders. There was a little bit of simmering romance in the background with DCI Brad Madison playing the love interest. However, the romance was kept to a minimum in favour of pace and suspense.
Well written and addictive. This is a book I couldn't put down until I got to the end. ( )

Julia Grey is a psychotherapist in Lodon with a busy professional life. Besides seeing patients in her home. she also works at two clinics, one of which performs abortions. But her personal life is at low ebb. She still misses her brother Luke who died in a house fire almost 20 years ago, her parents have moved to Spain & she recently split from Andrew, a charming artist with a major drinking problem. Single again & with no family in town, her days have become routine. That's about to change.
She gets an anonymous text one night telling her to show up at one of the city's bridges early the next morning to see something interesting. Curiosity gets the better of her & she arrives in time to see a small crowd gathering around the body of a young woman floating in the water. The police seem to doubt a connection. But soon another text arrives, followed by another body. Worse, a pattern is beginning to develop in that each victim is tied to her in some way. By the time number three is found, Julia's orderly world is starting to crumble.
It's not helped by some particularly difficult patients. There's the strange Mr. Fin who's a little on the creepy side & Lynn, the mother of a bullied child. The only positive is DCI Brad Madison, her contact with the police. He's sympathetic, helpful & doesn't hesitate to involve Julia in the case as the messages become more cryptic. It all boils down to motive & it's not 'til past events are tied to the present that we begin to see why Julia is a target.
This is a psychological thriller, no surprise given the author is a psychotherapist. As the investigation progresses, the reader feels the tension as they race against time trying to figure out where the next body will appear if they can prevent another murder. There are several viable candidates for the killer to keep you guessing & the constant rainy weather lends an atmospheric, at times almost claustrophobic feel to the setting.
The characters are well written & developed. The plot starts slowly but builds in intensity, mirroring the investigation. My only issue was with a scene near the end involving Julia & a search of the sewer system. It seemed highly improbable & her presence wasn't necessary in terms of moving the story along or providing any new information to the reader.
Still, an engrossing book that quickly pulls you in & keeps you reading to see how it all shakes out. ( )

A really enjoyable action packed thriller aka police procedural of sorts.
Very well written with the interesting topic of London's bridges where the tidal nature of the main portion of the River Thames becomes the backdrop for a series of killings.
A refreshing change from the norm in that this book is thoroughly researched and is presented as a series of cryptic historical puzzles.
The main character, a psychoanalyst becomes the keystone in an intricate and intriguing plot, which becomes a battle of wits against the killer.
Well worth the read but be warned.....it's almost unputdownable and if all this sounds too macabre .....there's always the budding romance between the policeman and the psychoanalyst to brighten things up!

I received this book from the netgalley website. ( )
