In compiling this personal survey of modern picture-books from all quarters of the globe, Bettina Hürlimann has drawn on the private library of picture-books assembled by Mrs. Elisabeth Waldmann in Zurich, and on her own collection of children's books. In selecting books for discussion, Mrs. Hürlimann has borne in mind the 'spontaneous relationship that should exist between author, illustrator and child'. The great richness and variety of the picture-book world is shown in the examples of work from the twenty-two countries represented in the book. The introductory text is followed by an anthology of illustrations, arranged by subject, designed to show how the world is revealed to children through picture-books. The text and pictures are followed by a section devoted to brief biographies of the chief artists whose work has been dealt with, including, where possible, short bibliographies of English, French and German editions of their books. Brian Alderson, who has translated the book from the German, has, with the author's permission, slightly enlarged this section bearing in mind the special needs of English and American readers. Picture-Book World is intended as a supplementary volume to Mrs. Hürlimann's Three Centirues of Children's Books in Europe. (Inside cover). Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
