One of the comic previews I got my hands on this year for Free Comic Book Day was Stuff of Legend, and the preview was enough to spur my getting the first trade paperback release in my hot little hands. I’m glad I bothered looking this series up, because it is currently blowing my mind with how quality it is. It is a dark tale of war and rescue in a world run by a shadowy Boogeyman – and the cast is made up of a little boy’s toys come to life. But this isn’t just Toy Story with the veneer stripped off; it’s something much more than that. Read the rest of my review at Nagareboshi Reviews! When a young boy is kidnapped by the Bogeyman, a group of toys must venture into The Dark in order to rescue him. Raicht's dark 'Toy Story' tale feels similar to what Bill Willingham has been doing with Fables. Artwork is spectactular, the story is compelling but a bit thin for this first volume. Definitely left me a bit disappointed there wasn't more of a distinct resolution for the first book, but definitely left me wondering when Book 2 will be published. After the Boogeyman kidnaps a young boy, his toys mobilize to save their beloved master. The metallic Colonel leads Maxwell the teddy bear, Percy the piggy bank, the wooden duck Quackers, the Native American Princess, Jester from the jack-in-box, the angel Harmony, and the real puppy Scout into the feared closet. Upon entering the Boogeyman's domain, toys shake their artificiality and become the things they represent (Maxwell an actual bear, Quackers a real duck, Princess a flesh and blood Indian, etc.) In an amazing cross-pollination of Toy Story and Wizard of Oz, Raicht, Smith, and Wilson introduce a fascinating land inhabited by forgotten toys and fueled by the forces of evil. Newcomer Wilson's lush work ideally supports this imaginative triumph.
Gr 5 Up-Most children can remember losing a favorite toy, but what happens when a group of favorite toys lose their boy? The Colonel and his hastily assembled team of rescuers enter "the Dark"-the mysterious world inside a closet, embarking on a mission to save the child. Once inside, they are up against the nearly unstoppable Boogeyman, a creature made from nightmares who has his own designs on the boy. After a trip to the city of Hopscotch, where life is nothing but a game, the toys are branded "rule breakers" and forced into a game they may not be able to win. This eerie graphic novel, set in a quiet Brooklyn home in 1944, uses muted sepia tones and realistic artwork to present the unimaginable world the protagonists are thrust into. From the insane Jester's murderous glee to Max the Bear's raging ferocity, readers can see every emotion on the characters' faces. It almost feels like a children's story gone horribly wrong in the most wonderful way. The images of battles and violence are definitely not for the timid. nbsp; The year is 1944. As Allied forces fight the enemy on Europe's war-torn beaches, another battle begins in a child's bedroom in Brooklyn. When the nightmarish Boogeyman snatches a boy and takes him to the realm of the Dark, the child's playthings, led by the toy soldier known as the Colonel, band together to stage a daring rescue. On their perilous mission they will confront the boy's bitter and forgotten toys, as well as betrayal in their own ranks. Can they save the boy from the forces of evil, or will they all perish in the process? The Stuff of Legend is a haunting and ultimately redemptive tale of loyalty, camaraderie, and perseverance. This edition includes a brand-new story featuring the Colonel's war journal, maps, sketches, and other original material! Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
