This book contained some good information put into historical context. However, there were long periods of boring verbosity. I come to expect this with Tuchman so I usually hang in there with her to glean the tidbits which I find useful. NA Read 2015. Very enjoyable Tuchman, as always. This is a seminal examination of the people and culture of Europe and America before the first World War. Covering France, England, Germany, Austria, and the United States, Tuchman examines the people who shaped movements like socialism and political events such as the Dreyfus affair. Highly recommend this history read. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

In The Proud Tower, Barbara Tuchman concentrates on society rather than the state. With an artist's selectivity, Tuchman brings to vivid life the people, places, and events that shaped the years leading up to the Great War: the Edwardian aristocracy and the end of their reign; the anarchists of Europe and America, who voiced the protest of the oppressed; Germany, as portrayed through the figure of the self-depicted hero, Richard Strauss; the sudden gorgeous blaze of Diaghilev's Russian Ballet and Stravinsky's music; the Dreyfus Affair; the two peace conferences in The Hague; and, finally, the youth, ideals, enthusiasm, and tragedy of socialism, epitomized in the moment when the heroic Jean Jaures was shot to death on the night the War began and an epoch ended. And while most readers enjoyed this book, it never grabbed me. It did describe several aspects of society in the western warring nations prior to the outbreak of war, but didn't give me insights into how and war actually broke out, and thus didn't meet my needs or expectations.
