Recognizing that a work of art is the product of a particular time and place as much as it is the creation of an individual, Duby provides a sweeping survey of the changing mentalities of the Middle Ages as reflected in the art and architecture of the period. "If Age of the Cathedrals has a fault, it is that Professor Duby knows too much, has too many new ideas and takes such a delight in setting them out. . . insights whiz to and fro like meteorites."—John Russell, New York Times Book Review… (altro)

A reler oportunamente… e sempre.
Outros interesses, outras necessidades, logo outras leituras e outras conclusões.

illustrations are few, in black & white, and not particularly interesting. Haven't read the text yet. ( )

Throughout the three parts of this book – the Monastery 980-1130, the Cathedral 1130-1280 and the Palace 1280-1420 – the author examines the social and cultural contexts that guided artistic creation in the West between the 10th and 15th centuries. The evolution of art and architecture is thus seen through the evolution of mentalities, of society, and of political and religious power during three periods: the first one marked by monastic culture and the weakening of royal power, the second by the development of cities and of large Gothic cathedrals, and finally, the period marked by the Renaissance and the assertion of secular culture.
