In As Husbands Go, Susie Gersten is surrounded by severely dysfunctional people. Her in-laws, her best friend, her own parents. Susie has her own issues. She even admits that she's more superficial than Super Mom. The only perfect person in her world is her husband, Jonah; everyone says so. Until he's found murdered in a prostitute's apartment.

But Susie isn't satisfied with the results of the police investigation, so along with her very not-grandmotherly grandmother, she launches her own investigation. Susie's no Nancy Drew, but she manages to solve the mystery while battling her in-laws, Jonah's business partners, and the DA's office.

Considering the subject is a dead husband, there is quite a bit of humor in this book. There is also a lot of heartbreak: Susie telling her four-year-old triplets that Daddy's not coming back, and all those little moments when it hits her that Jonah won't be walking through the door again.

I'd recommend this book and I'll be adding other books from Susan Isaacs to my to-read list.

There is no blood, sex or graphic violence in this book, but there is some language and some discussion of whether Jonah had sex with the prostitute.

I won this book in a Goodreads First-reads Giveaway. ( )

Much below the usual standard for this author. The first part of the book dragged on and on and the action in the last part was very disjointed. ( )

I thought Susan Isaacs was a more intellectual writer -- but that sure wasn't the impression given off in this book. Susie Gersten must come to terms with her upstanding, faithful husband Jonah's murder in an escort's apartment. She refuses to beleive he would cheat on her or that their marriage was anything but happy despite dropping oblique references here and there to strife. Her sarcastic voice began to grate early on because no one (not even said husband or her 3 adorable, work-intensive triplets) escape her sharp-tongued observations. Her constant name-dropping of brands and styles was annoying -- maybe more of a NY thing? but so irrelevant to the story's action. So, Susie with the help of her eccentric Grandma Ethel set out to solve the mystery of Jonah's death -- something the NYPD couldn't apparently handle competently. A farce, but not a fun one. ( )

As first I couldn't stand this book and almost quit reading. The main character, Susie, is so critical of everyone else that she introduces in this book that I want to scream at her! She bad mouths everyone. The book gets much better when she is actually trying to figure out why her husband died and who killed him. Then it actually gets entertaining. ( )

high quality chick lit, but could have done with some editing as some sections seemed to drag. Wife looking for missing husband who was found dead in apt of call-girl. Widow sets out to prove husband had not been visiting her for sex. Grandmother character reminds me of Grandma Mazur. ( )
