I LOVED this book---full of wonderful characters that I just plain moved in with as the story progressed---great details and another British author for me to read more now that I've discovered her. ( ) This was a very good book, shocking I have never read anything else by this author, and she has written a lot of books! The plot is a new one for me, old college friends get together in their older years to live nearby each other, it goes wrong here and there, but made for a great story. Rosie Thomas's writing reminds me of Mauve Binchy, and I loved all her books. So I have a new author to read, that's so exciting! Six college friends reunite in their 60s to live together on the same property. It sounds like a great premise for a story - can friendships be re-ignited after people have lived totally different lives for many years? Once I got all of the characters figured out, I really started to enjoy this book. I think that it's a book that will be most enjoyed by readers the same age as the characters because many of the topics focus on ageing, health and the struggles in long term marriages. Younger readers will enjoy it too but I think that older readers will understand the characters better. My favorite characters were the three women and I identified with parts of each of them in my life. By the middle of the book, I wanted to keep reading to find out how the women adjusted to the changes in their lives and how they lived with such strained friendships. To me, the women in this novel are the reason that it's such a great book to read. A nice book, but I think I have outgrown this author. Miranda Meadowe is the sole beneficiary of her late husbands old country home. Faced with a lonely old age, she invites a group of her university friends from the sixties, to invest in the property and retire there with her. However, events don't go according to plan as old flames are rekindled and other relationships come adrift. The story of Miranda Meadowes and her dream. Her husband has died and she invites four of her old friends from univeristy days to come and share her big old house with her to stave off the onset of old age. If the word old age is mentioned in company money must be donated for a special event they can all share. All five come. One couple Amos and Katherine plan to build a big new house on some of the land while Selwyn and Polly, who are short of money just plan to do up one wing of the house by themselves to live in. Single, gay Colin comes and goes but lives in the house when is there. But when Iron Age remains are found on the building site that interferes with the plans for the new house. Added to that old attractions surface, and marriages are not always what they seem and this creates tensions among the group. New aquaintances are made and these people come to share their lives with the group of friends. The future for this group turns out to be different from what they expected when they first accepted Miranda's offer. An enjoyable read, with real people, facing real and believable problems. . nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
From the bestselling author of Iris and Ruby comes a novel in which a group of old friends reunite to start a new stage of their lives. Miranda Meadowe decides a lonely widowhood in her crumbling country house is not for her. Reviving a university dream, she invites five of her oldest friends to come and join her to live, and to stave off the prospect of old age. All have their own reasons for accepting. To begin with, omens are good. They laugh, dance, drink and behave badly, as they cling to the heritage they thought was theirs for ever: power, health, stability. They are the baby boomers; the world is theirs to change. But as old attractions resurface alongside new tensions, they discover that the clock can't be put back. When building work reveals an Iron Age burial site of a tribal queen, the outside world descends on their idyllic retreat, and the isolation of the group is breached. Now the past is revealed; and the future that beckons is very different from the one they imagined. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
