The charcoal drawings are nice and simple still showing the texture of the paper the originals were drawn on. The book is loosely divided into habitat sections with the poetry about the animals found in those habitats. The absolute best part of the book is at the end where the author explains in brief the form and inspiration of each poem. It is an exceptional feature. ( )

The author lives in PDX so many of her subjects are favorite familiars. The section at the back talking about the poetic forms she used was a bit dry and we skimmed it mostly to talk about the sibilant and alliterative poem about snakes, which was a blast to read. ( )

I thought the poems were delightful and great for an elementary classroom. The instruction on how she wrote each poem would be monumentally helpful in the classroom! ( )
