This book is great for teaching students about different habitats and environments, specifically focusing on the temperate rainforest when reading this book. This text could be read aloud or kept in the library for students who are interested in frogs and other Austrailian animals. There is a glossary in the back that further describes the animals which is great for struggling readers as well as ELLs. The detailed, realistic illustrations easily engage the students, keeping them interested throughout the book. Genre: Non-fiction (informational) I would: -present it to a group of fourth or fifth grade students as a book they can use to read on their own. -have students use it as a reference book when writing an essay about comparing and contrasting. The students can compare and contrast two of the many types of frogs that are mentioned in the book. Critique: "Hip-Pocket Papa" is a great example of an informational book because it presents accurate information. It also includes great photographs that accompany the text. The book also includes a map at the end that shows where all of the photographs were taken. Therefore, students can also gain geographical knowledge from the book. The male hip-pocket frog, about the size of a human thumbnail, lives in the temperate forest in Australia. This book tells the story of how this tiny frog nurtures and protects his young until they are ready to venture out into the world on their own. The hip-pocket papa must face dangerous predators such as snakes and birds as well as battle environmental obstacles such as drought and strong winds. However, in the end, he perseveres and successfully releases his brood into the forest. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

When the eggs of the hip-pocket frog hatch, the father sits "while the tadpoles wiggle up his hind legs and into the hidden pockets on his hips." But that is only the beginning of a fascinating adventure--the father must evade predators while searching for the perfect place for his froglets to emerge.
