I love Native American books. This culture is just so fascinating. In this story, a young boy wants to help his people search and capture the buffalo. So, he stumbles upon the Great Chief, and the legend of horses is born. ( )

genre: legend

review: This is a great example of a legend. The story explains how the horse was created. The reader is engaged with the beautiful illustrations and the workmanship of the Great Chief and supporting animals. ( )

Genre: Myth

This is a good example of a myth because it tells how the Native Americans believe the horse to be created. It also says in the beginning that it was taken from a Blackfoot myth. It is a good story to use when the children are learning about Native Americans and their way of life. The story gives evidence of how they live and survive, for example, living off of the buffalo.
