Homicide detective Inspector Singh has returned home to Singapore to rest his weary feet after time spent globe-trotting and crime-solving in Malaysia and Bali. But it's not long before he wishes he would be sent off to another foreign locale. With his wife nagging him and his boss lecturing him about his unconventional work habits, he's thrilled when a new case comes across his desk. A senior partner at an international law firm has been murdered, and it's up to Singh to catch the killer and solve the case. There's no shortage of suspects, from the victim's fellow partners, many of whom are keeping secrets, to the dead man's wife and ex-wife. Soon, Inspector Singh is poised to expose the treachery that lies beneath Singapore's high society.… (altro)

The third case of Inspector Singh was even more thrilling than the first two. The story and the investigations take several interesting turns which keep the reader thrilled and interested. I can hardly wait to "meet" Inspector Singh in his next case... ( )

Inspector Singh is a Sikh police Inspector who lives and works in Singapore. Far from religiously observant, Singh is overweight, fond of beer, curry and smoking, and wears white running shoes everywhere. He has the approval of neither his strong willed wife, nor his superiors, who don't think he fits into the culture of the force and try to keep him out of the country.

This mystery begins with a surprising murder of senior partner, Mark Thompson at his law firm. When several of the other lawyers show up for an emergency meeting called by Mark, they discover he has been beaten to death in his office with his expensive paperweight. The Inspector is called in to investigate. Unlike his previous cases, this time he has the full support of his superiors as well as all the help he could want. Despite all the assistance, this is no easy case, with a collection of potential killers to pick from. Could the murder have been committed by one of the women in Mark's life or possibly by one of the partners in the law firm, all hiding their own secrets.

This is my third Inspector Singh mystery and I find the characters in this series to be lots of fun. He reminds me a bit of a Sikh Hercule Poirot. They are definitely not cozy, but I wouldn't call them gritty either. If you enjoy a series set in some interesting locations with a grumpy and rumpled main character, then this series might be what you are looking for. ( )

A senior partner in the Singapore branch of an international law firm is found in his office one evening bludgeoned to death with a paperweight. Only the partners have passkeys to get in the offices at that hour. All of them have secrets, but lawyers have to be good at keeping secrets.

Interesting to see Inspector Singh on his home turf professionally and domestically. ( )

The ending was satisfying but not totally unexpected. I think I like Singh better when he investigates abroad. ( )

This is good in-flight reading; pop it into the bag alongside the latest title in the Botswana-set No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith or Anne Zouroudi's most recent novel starring Hermes Diaktoros

Whoever commits murder shall be punished with death. -- Section 302, Singapore Penal Code, Chapter 224
No man is an island, entire of itself...
any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind;
and therefore never send to know
for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
