The "Age of Goethe" is considered the most appropriate description of the unprecedented German cultural efflorescence from Sturm und Drang through Romanticism. The contributors to this volume have attempted to look at the authors with fresh eyes, to re-examine their place in the literary canon, to examine the works themselves rather than the secondary literature about them. They also have devoted special attention to the matter of the primary bibliography of each author, as in some cases it was discovered that no reliable bibliography of any kind existed.
