"The Great Tokyo Earthquake. Ten years ago, it destroyed lives as it tore buildings asunder. Among those who lived through the disaster was Ganta Igarashi, now a middle school student finally getting a footing in his own life-- that is, until the day the 'Red Man' appears at his school and turns his world upside down again. Ganta's entire class is brutally murdered, and although innocent of the crime, Ganta is sentenced to death and sent to the bizarre prison known as 'Deadman Wonderland.' There, a brutal game of survival begins, where Ganta must discover the truth behind his classmates' murder. Can Ganta break out of Deadman Wonderland-- or will it break him first?"--P. I think I would probably enjoy watching this as an anime more than I enjoyed reading it. The story was interesting. ( )

I have no idea what this manga was about. Not really. And this is coming from someone who read ALL of [book:Gantz/1|2824337] as it came out. Yeah, I am not easily confused.

At the beginning I thought I knew. This review is for the entire manga, so I'm putting it in a spoiler since there is no tankōbon.

The first few issues are about "Thunderdome" style fighting that takes place inside a prison for young adults and older teenagers. There is some side information about a giant earthquake and the need for housing dangerous criminals because society has broken down, hence the creation of Deadman Wonderland, a profitable theme park where you can bring the kiddies to watch teens/young adults kill each other. Deadman Wonderland helps pay for the reconstruction of Japan.

With blood. Yeah. They can do deadly tricks with their blood. When the manga opens up, the main character is watching his entire high school class being slaughtered by a hooded and masked person. The mystery killer does this by cutting or nicking themselves and then hurling the blood away from themselves where it forms deadly blades/spikes/disks. Our main character also has this ability, although he doesn't know it yet. So off to Deadman Wonderland he goes.

Okay. That's a pretty good premise. I'm used to the conventions in manga about blood typing and personality, so I can roll with that. The first few issues are about our hero honing his new skills and moving up in the prison rankings. Some by accident, but most because of his natural talents and hard work. Not bad! It has potential and the fight scenes are pretty nifty with each of the fighters having unique abilities. A bit gamerish, but that's okay.

Then it became about a power struggle between the elite. The fights become less about the prison and more about personal relationships. One of the blood fighters was able to set his blood on fire. Wat. A military general didn't seem to mind her subordinates making jokes about her huge breasts. Okay.

By the end of the series it was about insane scientists doing experiments on children, some guy trying to live forever by transferring his memories, and individual battles that made little sense.

By the end I was frustrated and skimming over the fight scenes, which were redundant and kind of annoying. The relationship between Ganta and Shiro was too bizarre to contemplate. I wanted to stop reading, but I was on the last issue.

So, in the end, this had potential but slid off into bizzaro land with no hope for it.

I have had this manga series on my to be read list for a while and was excited get it for Christmas. This was a wonderful start to this manga series. It is engaging, very creative, and a bit bizarre.

Ganta Igarashi is a middle school student who is wrongly accused of murdering his classmates (something that was actually caused by the appearance of a strange Red Man). As punishment he is sent to Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland is a prison complex that doubles as an amusement park for the general public. Basically in Deadman Wonderland the inmates participate in bizarre shows and contests to help fund the rebuilding of Tokyo after its destruction in a great earthquake.

This book is a bit science fiction and a bit horror with some dystopian elements. The whole book takes place ten years after the Great Tokyo Earthquake. Tokyo is struggling to rebuild and a big part of their financing comes from the Deadman Wonderland amusement park.

There are a lot of characters introduced but the main ones are Ganta and Shiro. Ganta is a very confused and horrified middle grade student who was witness to unspeakable horror and then accused of being the person who caused that horror. Shiro is a strangely happy and innocent girl with odd white hair that befriends Ganta inside of Deadman Wonderland. They are both incredibly interesting and mysterious characters that I am dying to know more about.

This book just introduces us to the series and, oh my, what an interesting set up it is. Deadman Wonderland is fascinating in its own right, the idea of inmates being slaughtered in contests for public entertainment is so very Roman. You find out that Deadman Wonderland has some other very dangerous secrets and then there is the who mysterious Red Man who causes mass slaughter. Add to that the mysterious way Ganta seems to be able to stay alive and you have an amazingly addictive story.

This is a pretty gruesome, gory, and creepy book, so I would recommend to older teen and adult only (I think it’s rated older teen).

Overall I absolutely loved this intro to this creepy sci-fi story with dystopian elements. It’s a fascinating set-up with some big mysteries and some engaging characters. It was an awesome read and I can’t wait to read the next one. I recommend to those who like horror/sci-fi manga. ( )
