In its most general sense "feminist ethics" refers to any ethical
theory that locates its roots in feminism, especially in the contem-
porary feminist movement. "Feminism" is itself a much contested
term, but in its most fundamental meaning it represents a position,
a belief, a perspective, a movement, that is opposed to discrimina-
tion on the basis of gender. It is, therefore, opposed to sexism in all
of its forms, whether within institutional structures and practices,
attitudes and behaviors, or ideologies, beliefs, and theories that
establish and reinforce gender discrimination. In terms of social
structure, feminism is opposed to gendered patterns of domination
and subordination, gendered role differentiation, gender-biased
unequal access to goods and services. In addition, feminism is
opposed to other forms of unjust discrimination and patterns of
domination; it includes in its analysis the socially constructed con-
nections among gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and
other particular characterizations that can be the basis of discrimi-
nation and oppression.
