[Preface to the Reprint Edition] The Falls of St. Anthony: The Waterfall That Built Minneapolis is an updated edition of The Waterfall That Built a City: The Falls of St. Anthony in Minneapolis, originally published in 1966 by the Minnesota Historical Society.
[Preface] The story of the Falls of St. Anthony, the only major waterfall in the Mississippi River, spans almost three centuries from the period of discovery and exploration in the 1600s to the present.
Winding its way southward through Minnesota the Mississippi River leaps over a sixteen-foot precipice known as the Falls of St. Anthony.
[Epilogue] The story of the Falls of St. Anthony from the 1960s to 1986 is like the earlier history, a complicated one involving public and private interests.

[Preface to the Reprint Edition] For assistance generously given I am indebted to Scott Anfinson, Elisabeth Doermann, Leona Kane Eder, Dennis Gimmestad, Deborah Miller, Kathy O'Brien, Ann Regan, and Albert D. Wittman, and to the librarians of the Minnesota Historical Society and the Minneapolis History Collection at the Minneapolis Public Library and Information Center.
[Preface] In addition, I am indebted for their patient help to the personnel of the offices of the Ramsey County Register of Deeds, the Ramsey County Clerk of District Court, the Hennepin County Register of Deeds, the Hennepin County Clerk of District Court, and the City Clerk of Minneapolis.
[Epilogue] Although the future is obscure, there are certainties revealed in the recent past: The riverfront is no longer the back door of the city, and the city has paid its respects to the falls area where its life began.
