I read this book because the 4th book in the series won an award from the Wolfe pack and I am a huge nero Wolfe fan, but didn’t want to just start several books in. I am unsure now if I’ll be able to make myself read another one. I try to make allowances for the fact that this is the author’s first book. The lead character is truly insufferable. There is a reason genius characters like Wolfe and Holmes are given normal sidekicks, to make them more human. Giving this one a neglected wife and child was necessary for this particular story but really made the character hard to like. He might have been forgiven if he were brilliant, as the author told us he was again and again, but the few insights ha has come from his wife. Scylla and Charybdis as esoteric characters no regular person would be familiar with?!the way the 19 number “trick” was done? Wel, I guess I should just say, this one was definitely not for me ( ) Sé lo que estás pensando John Verdon Publicado: 2010 | 384 páginas Novela Policial Serie: David Gurney #1 /snSNpDk7d_G4 Un hombre recibe una carta que le urge a pensar en un número, cualquiera.
...If this sounds like the kind of head-scratching setup that would get Sherlock Holmes off his cocaine, it’s not the last similarity between the Victorian sleuth and his contemporary counterpart. Gurney has the same precision, logic and thirst for clarity...Dave Gurney is off to a good start too, no matter where his “retirement” takes him. His creator is obviously very comfortable in the genre already. Now he just needs to break from the pack a little more. Premi e riconoscimentiMenzioniElenchi di rilievo

Those who comply find that the letter writer has predicted their random choice exactly. But when oddities that begin as a diverting puzzle quickly ignite into a massive serial murder investigation, police are confronted with a baffling killer, one who is fond of rhymes filled with threats and warnings, whose attention to detail is unprecedented, and who has an uncanny knack for disappearing into thin air. Brought in as an investigative consultant, Dave Gurney, a recently retired NYPD homicide investigator, soon accomplishes deductive breakthroughs that leave local police in awe. Yet, even as he matches wits with his seemingly clairvoyant opponent, Gurneys tragedy-marred past rises up to haunt him, his marriage approaches a dangerous precipice, and he wonders if hes met an adversary who cant be stopped.
