(translation of Keeglimaja from Käekäik by Jüri Üdi)
Of the first night, the grasshoppers sing.
From the bowling alley can be heard the rattle of bones,
The fall of the pins.
An old man lights the wall lamps
Three minutes earlier than yesterday.
He lives here year round,
He is called the Ballboy.
An hour before the bowling alley closes
I see, standing against the wall, is Jüri Üdi.
A Tallinn cellist is beside him.
They speak between themselves. About what?
Who can know.
And no longer can I hit the pins!
I lose, perhaps I am being watched.
Then I remember the saying: Those who don’t win the game,
Will win at love. And so I depart.
I am observed by Üdi and the cellist.
They would win at the game.
And so I am correct. ( )
