To 'walk in Pimlico' is, according to the Penguin Dictionary of Historical Slang, the colloquial expression 'to be handsomely dressed'. Comedian, clog dancer, comic vocalist, actor and all-round funny fellow Corney Sage is treading the boards at the Constellation in Whitechapel when he stumbles across the body of an actress outside the theatre and catches sight of the killer as he escapes. Corney was not the only witness. Fellow actress Lucy Strong also saw what happened and when the murderer returns to the scene of the crime that same night, both fear for their lives. Corney and Lucy flee London separately, keeping in touch with each other through a series of advertisements in the trade paper, the Era. Certain they have escaped the same fate as Bessie, they settle into their new lives away from London. Notti al circo di Angela Carter (nessreader)
nessreader: because of the working class gutsiness of the victorian narrator and the music hall background.

Absolutely great story and steeped in the time and places it is set in, language and all. Humour without whimsy and rather dark. Just brilliant. I twigged early on where Springwell really is, but I was delighted to be completely surprised by the last twist in the tail!

Even better the second time, especially as I had completely forgotten what the last twist could be! Upgrading to 5 stars. The different voices are well handled but the main voice - Corney Sage - comes across as such a complex living person that by then my emotions were invested heavily and I was completely taken up by the last feverish, dreamy, rushing passages.

Obviously I know Springwell/Matlock Bath but I'm guessing Abbotswelford is Abbots Langley. Burdon Oaks is more of a puzzle.... Church Stretton? and New Clay I like to think is Clay Cross. Anyway LOVE it. ( )

Un cadre intéressant, mais, un moment l'on perd le fil de l'intrigue... Et hop, le hasard résout tout... Un brin dommage! ( )

I enjoyed this very much. It's an unusual murder mystery tale set in Victorian England. ( )

This unusual novel about the Victorian Theatre is to be highly recommended. It concerns the murder of a prostitute, which has been witnessed by one Corney Sage. Sage is a low comedian and clog-dancer who spends most of the story being pursued by a most unusual and almost invisible killer. The era is wonderfully evoked as are the atmospheres of concert-rooms,circuses and freak-shows. Featherstone's expertise in her writing about the theatre is evident. ( )
