A Boy, a girl and an obsession e And there she is, the girl in a long red skirt, with her pale plaits swinging below her waist. She speaks no English. Frankie only knows that she is a gypsy from Roumania. And he can't keep his eyes off her. It is a terrible shock when his neighbours on the estate react violently against Emilia's people. Worse, it is his own mother who is leading the protest. And at that point as Frankie realizes the extent of his own family's prejudices, his life begins to change. A moving and deeply satisfying story of obsession and prejudice, and love and hate, and of the betrayal of those we love.… (altro)

This was okay, but I didn't really like Frankie and never empathised with him. However, I did like Emi, but felt she could have been further developed. I would have liked more information about her past and her life as a gypsy. This book is promoted as a love story, but the romance is barely touched upon. Frankie's feelings are all in his head and he never shares them with Emi. "Girl in Red" is for younger readers and deals with prejudice, friendship and refugees. ( )

I was really looking forward to reading this book which I got through a book swap as the issue of prejudices is something I am interested in and also because I at one time lived in an area where there was a lot of negative talk about a number of gypsy families that had lived in the area.

But instead of finding an interesting read with a good story or desire to make things better in the future I was left feeling like 'what was the point of this?'. There was no good moral, no shocking end and not even an interesting storyline. I don't even see how any of these would have been fulfilled for a younger reader, who the book was actually targeted for...very disappointing! ( )
