In my opinion, this is a good book for children to read or to be read to children because of the illustrations, the story line, and the cultural aspect embedded within it. First, the illustrations, although done by an adult, seem to have a stroke of innocence within them. For instance, the marks of Ah Jim's hair and the pots and pans in the kitchen are not all the same shade of black. I am not insinuating that the illustrator is not a good at his job, but it seems as though a kid drew/colored some of the pictures. I believe that the illustrator made it that way to capture the innocence from the character Ah Jim. Second, the story line of finding the perfect pet to fit into a rice bowl is extremely cute. Ah Jim takes his mother seriously when she says to find a pet that will fit in a rice bowl and it turns out that he did find a little puppy that fit! This story line will make the readers go "Aww" because who can resist a little puppy in a rice bowl? Lastly, the Chinese culture is embedded throughout this entire book. It talks about how Ah Jim goes to both English school and Chinese school as well as that he is fluent in Cantonese. The illustrations of the outfits of the characters, the specific environment of each place Ah Jim goes and the objects within those environments emphasize the Chinese culture as well. Also, the reference to all of the different animals is symbolic to the Chinese calendar. Each year is a different animal, year of the dog, year of the golden dragon, etc. Therefore, the author included the search for the animal to fit into the rice bowl to refer to the symbolism of each animal within the Chinese culture. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
