This is a complicated historical period stemming from a dearth of sources compared to the time before and after, and as such the real "dark" age. We get a good tour of the known highlights, the last roman emperors, the triumph of christianity, schism with the east (byzantine empire), the carolingians, a view to islamic Spain, and rounding it out with some material on how this begins to shape modern Europe.

I think the lecturer did a good job presenting the material, but there's just not that richness (of sources) to make it a really compelling period. ( )

My fiancé and I listened to this together in the car for most episodes and both loved the topic and Daileander's lecture style, who is very dry and humorous. We normally don't agree on much when it comes to things to read or listen to, so when we find something together, it's always great. Highly recommend this for anyone interested in the Middle Ages. ( )

very interesting discussion of the early middle ages and the decline of the Roman Empire. Has clarified much of this history in my mind. ( )

Colleges van een historicus die zijn PhD haalde aan Harvard en nu lesgeeft op het William & Mary College. Hij combineert de grote lijn en het treffende detail en maakt ook nog af en toe een grap (wel met uitgestreken gezicht). Echt heel goed, ter lering ende vermaak. ( )
