This is a second book by Maureen Sutton, setting out reminiscences by the people of Lincolnshire concerning folklore events tied to the time of year, most of which are no longer celebrated. Included here are unusual festivals such as Oak Apple Day, Plough Monday, All Fools Day, Thinking Day, Grudge Day, Samphire Day, Tulip Sunday, Kick A Frenchman Day (!) and Mischief Night, in addition to more well known ones such as New Year's Eve, Bonfire Night and Halloween. The oral recollections gathered by the author are supplemented by useful literary references and the whole has been edited and introduced by Shaun Tyas. The events are presented in calendar order, a chapter for each month with an extra chapter for Easter customs. Index of places. A substantial hoard of 30 essays on name studies created in memory of the late Professor John McNeal Dodgson. A great many of the contributors here write on Anglo-Saxon topics. The authors include Kenneth Cameron, Richard Coates, Christine Fell, Gillian Fellows-Jensen, Margaret Gelling, W. F. H. Nicolaisen, Patrick Stiles, Veronica Smart and even Dodgson himself: the volume includes an unpublished essay. Also included is a bibliography of Dodgson's writings by Alexander Rumble and a memoir of his achievement by A. D. Mills. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
