Another excellent book by Elizabeth Moon. Many of her familiar characters from The Deed of Paksenarrion reappear here to lead their own adventures. The writing is touched with sadness at the necessary divisions between them, but its great to catch up and learn more about that world.
The only downside for me was Stammel's story which starts to break off in this book. My highlight was the continuation of Phelan's story as he's something of a favourite of mine. ( )
It is hard to describe how gently wonderful this book (and the rest of the series) is. Striding into the miasma of elves, dwarves, knights, magic, and battle, this is grounded in everyday action by real people. They sweat, they have to learn other languages, they get stuck in mud, and above all, they have to practice. No super kung fu without daily kata. On top of that, no padding, no hundreds of pages of description and clumsy exposition. The story flows and grows. This the work of a mature master. ( )
I am a big fan of fantasy novels especially if they are long and have several books in the series. I really enjoy a series of books that I can immerse myself in and this series allows me to do that. The story has many fascinating twists and turns and I find the characters to be very engaging. I first discovered these books years ago in a used book shop in Edinburgh and I have re-read them several times since. ( )

The only downside for me was Stammel's story which starts to break off in this book. My highlight was the continuation of Phelan's story as he's something of a favourite of mine. (
