Our foremost military historian offers us a compelling and at times terrifying account of what it means to be a contemporary soldier. In this remarkable book, Richard Holmes draws on the testimonies of the 700 soldiers of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment to capture in vivid detail the average soldier's day-to-day experience of war. Embroiled in a conflict often too dangerous for reporters to cover, these soldiers - most of them young, many without any previous experience of warfare - have kept ongoing records of the drudgery, anxiety and horror involved in fighting a violent and increasingly unpopular war against a ruthless and resourceful enemy. All have risked their lives, and many have died. Others have been recognised and awarded for their courage, resourcefulness and gallantry - Private Johnson Beharry recently became the first man to be awarded the Victoria Cross in twenty-three years. With these intimate and revealing glimpses of life in the modern army, Richard Holmes paints a sweeping portrait of a new generation of soldiers - grunts, gallants and heroes - and the sacrifices their decision to fight for their country entails.… (altro)

Did you know that a soldier driving a Warrior in combat in Al Amarah and under attack had an environment to fight in (his vehicle) that was at 106 degrees F. I didn't until I read this calm and affectionate recounting of the things our troops had to suffer in Basra and surrounds in 2004. As ever, Holmes brings a thorough and professional energy to his researches and his straightforward style belies the fellow-feeling he has for his subjects. Should be read by all politicos the night before they send troops to war. ( )

I've just finished reading "Dusty Warriors" by Richard Holmes and have to recommend it thoroughly. Published in May 2006, it is an account of the experiences of 1st The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment in Iraq in 2004. This was a period of major insurgency and 1PWRR was in the thick of the action in both Al Amarah and Basra. In addition to Pte Johnson Beharry's VC, the 1PWRR Battle Group were awarded 2 CGCs, 2 DSOs and 12 MCs for actions during this period.

Holmes is Colonel of the PWRR and visited them in that capacity during their Iraq deployment. His book makes extensive use of accounts from the soldiers on the ground and takes the reader through a general introduction to modern military life and onto the gory details of street fighting in Iraq.

For anyone interested in what has really been going on out there, or wanting to know how a British Armoured Infantry Battle Group fights urban insurgents, this book is essential reading. ( )
