gorgeous and whimsical -- just lovely. ( )

Beautifully illustrated -- really, I loved the drawings: whimsical floral and curvey patterns etched into the primary illustrations, paint-style washes, muted colors. (The note says the illustrations were created "by combining handmade painterly textures with digitally generated layers, which were then compiled in Adobe Photoshop".) [return][return]But the text was just not as good: It depicts lots of different animals and how they sleep. In this way, it is reminiscent of "Everybody Poops", but not as fun; and of "When I'm Sleepy" by Jane R. Howard, but without as much of a frame to hang it on. [return][return]So, 4 stars because of the illustrations, some of which I wouldn't mind framing. But the story alone would only get 3. ( )

This book is about how different animals sleep at night. Some sleep soundly, some sleep while moving, and others sleep with one eye open

"When the sky grows dark and the moon glows bright, everyone goes to sleep...except for the watchful owl."

Na then describes how many other different animals sleep - standing up, on the move, quietly, noisily, eyes closed or open - but "when the sky turns blue and the sun glows bright...everyone wakes up! Except for the tired owl."
