Being interactive is what computers do best. Movies, books, TV shows, records — these media are linear: start at the beginning and continue in a straight line to the end. But a WYSDOWYC project uses a computer's interactive capabilities so the viewer (reader; user; ineractivist?) can map more than one route through the information.
Studies have shown that learning is much more successful when several senses are involved. Presentations with visuals are much more effective than just plain talk. Interactive media requires physical involvement, too. Because it combines sight, hearing, and movement, interactive media can boost recall up to 85%.
In planning for animation, think small. You don't have to animate everything in a picture. One or two moving objects on a still background is an effective way of making interesting action on the screen. Small animations are viable on the Internet [in 1997], unlike movies and complicated animations.
Print, we might need to be reminded, is one of the media in multimedia. And however we downplay print because it lacks flash and things don't move, it possesses portability and permanence in spades. Our project may dazzle viewers, but unless we give them something to stuff in their pockets with our name and address on it, it's all over when the show is over.
