An LGBTQ+ classic by such a profound author. This story depicts a "non-traditional" family (2 white moms with adopted and diverse children) in a loving, compassionate way. The experiences they have together are meaningful but not depicted superficially or overblown. There are instances throughout that show some tensin and conflict, but overall, so well done and sweet to read.

A sweet story about a non-traditional family. About two moms and their adopted kids and shows that not all families are the same, but different does not mean bad. Even though they look a little different, they love the same. Good to have in class library for representation so that students have a book with a family that they can relate to, but controversial, so probably best for 2-3 grade. ( )

This is an inspiring story about a family with two moms living in a vibrant and diverse community, told from the viewpoint of one of their three adopted children

The story seemed to be too much of "SEE--even lesbians can have a family"--too disjointed and not enough consistency in the plot. Also, I am just not a fan of Polacco's artwork. ( )

Maramee, Meema and their children are just like any other loving family. They all cooked together, they danced together, they laughed together, and they goofed off together. Everyone on the block loved them, besides one family, the Lockners. The kids always wondered why the Lockners looked at them differently and never came to the parties they were invited to, but Maramee and Meema knew it was because they were different. Nonetheless, their household was full of love.

This whole family was like one big round character because we knew so much about the family as a whole. Separately the characters would be considered flat because we didn't know much about them, but I think it's necessary that we only view them as a family since this story was telling the story of the family together.

I really enjoyed this story; it was just so sweet. It breaks my heart that a family can be so loving and genuine and still be hated because of their differences. This family is one of a kind, not because there are two mothers, but because it's a family of unconditional love. In today's world, we don't see a lot of close-knit families anymore and it breaks my heart that this close-knit family was judged due to it's non-traditionality. ( )

While the inclusion of a prejudiced character in a children’s book takes pluck and merits praise, this theme needs to be explored more delicately, so as to reverse stereotypes and gradually uproot them. When we neglect children’s questions, we risk the danger that they may stop asking them.

When my mothers told me about how they brought me home to live with them shortly after I was born, their eyes would shine and glisten and they'd grin from ear to ear.
