Preface Old burial grounds fascinate me. I'm intrigued by the names, epitaphs, and artwork on the stones. The idyllic settings ofmany cemeteries appeal to me. I wonder about the history of the burial ground and about the people interred there. My interest began young on my family's occasional weekend outings to explore old graveyards. Now, as I see families pull off the road to take a closer look at a cemetery, I realize many people share this interest.
In Memory of Part One Old Burial Grounds of New Jersey: An Introduction I Scattered over the Hagstrom county maps of New Jersey, areas of green mark the locations of cemeteries. They come in all sizes, in many denominations. Some are large, well maintained, with new graves as well as old. Many are tiny, tucked into the corner of the woods, overgrown with weeds. Whether you call them cemeteries, graveyards, burial grounds,or burying grounds, they all hold much of interest to a visitor.
