I have very mixed feelings about this story. I have loved the entire series and all the characters that have gotten their happy endings. I enjoyed learning more about Zeke Mayes and Caitlyn Rogue Walker. We have read bits and piece about Sheriff Zeke Mayes since the first book in this series. He is the man that has tried to keep his county safe and free of trouble. He gives the Mackay boys trouble every chance he gets and he doesn't trust Timothy Cranston of Homeland Security any farther than he can throw him. He has been dancing around Rogue for five years. He thinks that he is too old for her and he has too many enemies to be sure she will be safe. I felt bad for the good sheriff though, his teenage years were miserable and his father was an ass. There is an attraction between Zeke and Rogue and they can only fight that fire so long before it burns out of control.

We also get more of the history of the Freedom League and who some of the other members were. This was a very sick group of people and I am sure that Dayle Mackay and Nadine Grace fit into the group very well. Most of the history we don’t find out about until the last three or four chapters of the book. The whole story is about betrayal and deception. I am surprised that things went on as long as they did before something blew up and exposed the League for what it really was.

The one major thing that just aggravates me no end is this idea so many female characters have that they can take care of themselves, especially when they are tiny things. Most of the time even a well-trained (military or law enforcement) woman is no match for a man twice her size. If that man has military or law enforcement training then she is going to be in trouble. I have no problem with a woman making her own decisions and making a life for herself but there are times that she is not going to be able to stand and fight toe to toe when there is trouble. Now she can be sneaky and take someone out when they are otherwise occupied.

For the most part I liked Rogue. She wasn't afraid of what others thought about her. She lived her life the way she wanted and did as she wanted. I was totally shocked that Dayle Mackay and Nadine Grace were so threaten by her. I think that if they had just left her alone she would have been a good teacher and live her life in quite solitude. It is funny to see the three Mackay cousins being so afraid of her. I loved the interaction with Rogue and her brother. I am sure there were lots of arguments between these two as they grew up. I also like that she referred to her father as Daddy. For all that she has gone through Rogue is still a decent person that cares for those few that she allows into her life.

This is the end for the Freedom League. The last members are rounded up and the group is essentially out of business. It is also the end of the Mackay story, or at least the story of the three cousins and their wives. It is a nice wrap up and I am little sorry to see it end. I understand that there are is one last story to this series and that is Timothy Cranston's story. It will be interesting to see who rattles the man that has made so many so miserable. ( )

I really love reading Lora Leigh. I accept that Ms. Leigh will mix metaphors and misuse words, she will repeat the same thought 4 different times in slightly different ways and call it a paragraph (1000 times over), she will write a very non-mysterious mystery, and there will always be deeply meaningful butt sex as if sphincter penetration is the new "I do." Despite coming from that place of acceptance, despite the book featuring a female lead I liked a lot, and despite some scorching sex scenes that I really really really enjoyed (no, really!)the repetition and word misuse in this book were so egregious that I could not fully enjoy my trashy read. I hate that! What we have here is an excellent first draft. Please Ms. Leigh, get an editor. I can recommend one. If you like Lora Leigh you will still want to read this, but if you are new to her start somewhere else. I recommend the Seals series. The writing there is a bit tighter. Sure it doesn't read like Proust, but then again, Proust never wrote meaningful butt sex. ( )
