Introduction Aims and Methods
This book is for adult students of local history and family historians who have no Latin and who consequently have not attempted to use Latin medieval and early modern sources in their researches. It aims to help the reader to acquire sufficient skill to translate the more commonly used and locally accessible documents in a field of study of which they may have been over-apprehensive. It does not seek to cover the whole range of primary source material not to explain every grammatical irregularity or refinement of construction to be found, but is is sufficient for the beginner to make an effective start. The book is based on the belief that although Latin is not simple and cannot be made simple it is nevertheless manageable: the student who works conscientiously through this book will be equipped, and feel confident enough, to continue his studies for himself at a more advanced level.

The main grammatical difference between English and Latin is that in English the position of the word in the sentence will usually show how it is being used, whereas in Latin it is the ending of the word that indicates its function.
