What Bluebirds Do, by Pamela F. Kirby, is a personal narrative concerning the life of two bluebirds who built a nest in the authors backyard. The author describes the type of bluebirds they are, in addition to the reason behind their coloring, mating rituals, and nesting techniques. Kirby also mentions other types of bluebirds not found in her back yard. This is a great informational book for elementary age children and one they could relate to by looking in their own backyards and comparing the birds they see to those in the book. Tips for attracting bluebirds to your yard can be found in the back of the book. The story of the bluebirds continues with the laying and hatching of eggs, to the feeding of the babies and the baby birds development over the span of several weeks. Full page photos of each event fill the pages, each photo catching details of the birds life. Overall the book is extremely informative and interesting, with much emphasis put on the beautiful photographs making it a great read. ( )

The photography in this title was exquisite and the book was very engaging; Bluebirds are not a subject I know anything about, though, so needed this primary-level introduction, ha ha. I liked getting extreme closeups of the birds so you could observe their markings and coloring differences. I even liked the kind of gross closeups of the baby birds. The very simple text about two birds meeting, mating, and taking care of their offspring is supplemented by some good info. about different types of bluebirds and resources for learning how to build a nest box for bluebirds in your yard. Surprisingly enjoyable! ( )
