In book one of the Wing Hunter Slayers series, Axel is a kickass hunter in desperate need a witch.
Historically, the Wing Slayers were witch hunters who killed the evil ‘demon witches’ but protected the good ‘earth witches.’ Thirty years ago, the demon witches cursed the race of slayers into craving witch blood. If the hunter gives in, he’ll lose his soul and become a heartless, killing monster. Axel and his hunter friends are determined to never give in, but the only way to calm their bloodlust without killing a witch is to have lots of sex with humans. When rogues are attacking witches, the hunters fight them, but they try their hardest to stay away from both types of witches, so they themselves won’t be tempted to hurt the women. (Rogues are ex-hunters who believe the curse will be broken if they kill all the witches in existence.)
Darcy is an earth witch but doesn’t know it. Raised by a mortal family, she always knew she was different but didn’t know why until two rogues attack her. Axel ends up saving her by kidnapping her. He needs her to do a spell to save his little sister from a death mark, but Darcy knows very little about witchcraft.
Their relationship starts with lots of problems. Neither trust each other, but they decide to work together to save the child. They learn from each other and become stronger and more powerful than they ever would’ve been if apart.
Axel and Darcy’s chemistry is off the charts. They’re both wonderfully stubborn and strong characters. They work great together, but their mistrust is understandable. Both characters feel very real, and their mutual sacrifices will pave the way for a better future.
Axel’s friends—Sutton, Key, Ram, and Phoenix—are in the same boat Axel’s in, and I can’t wait to see what happens to them when they meet the women who will save them in the following books. Darcy’s friends—Joe, Carla, and Morgan—play a big role in the story. I usually read books that feature a hero and his friends saving the day while the heroine’s friends don’t exist or are on the backburner. Not so in this book. Darcy’s pals are just as important as the hunters are.
I really enjoyed this story, but sometimes I had a hard time following. The history of the Wing Slayer Hunters, the earth witches, and the demon witches is scattered throughout the book in bits and pieces, which made it difficult to understand what was really going on and what these people were about. By the time all the information was stated, I was a little lost but managed to piece most everything together in my head. Now that I know what’s going on, I should be able to enjoy and understand the other books in the series better.
The story is free of spelling typos, from what I could tell. There were a few scenes where I would’ve liked more detail and description (I had a hard time picturing the cat inside the magical tapestry), but I could make out what was going on through my own imagination.
I definitely recommend this book for paranormal romance lovers, and I look forward to reading more in the series.

I read this for the Urban Fantasy square for Romance Bingo and it was also my Kindle Freebie selection.

Staring at her, he said, "I'm here for you, Darcy."

Urban fantasy isn't usually a sub-genre I read in and I'm not sure if that was why I had a problem getting into this one or not. It seemed like the world rules were dealt out a bit randomly, making it feel incoherent at times. There were a lot of supernatural beings with earth and demon witches, witch hunters and rogue, and ancestors and gods. While I appreciated the lack of info dumps, I never felt like I could grasp the world fully because of all the moving parts.

The heroine is an earth witch but doesn't know it so when she is kidnapped by the hero who is a witch hunter to remove a death curse from his little sister, she has no idea how to. At first the hero has to control is "bloodlust" to want to kill the heroine:

"But you're one of them. How will you keep from killing me?"
He hit the very edge of his control. The hot lust seized his balls, while the compulsion screamed for her blood. Sweat beaded and ran down his back. "Sex," he said. "I want to screw you more than I want to kill you."

That's right, this kidnapped woman who has been thrown into a supernatural world is told my her captor that if she doesn't want him to kill her, she must have sex with him. Needless to say, this beginning to their relationship left a bad taste in my mouth. I know more leeway is given in fantasy/supernatural stories because of destined soulmates, magic, or whatever other supernatural elements but this thinking and element kept me from connecting with the hero and heroine's romantic relationship.

If you like urban fantasy stories, you might want to give this one a go, the world and supernatural elements seem interesting enough and with the introduction to everything already done, the next books in the series might make more sense. There's a slew of side male friends of the hero who were introduced who have hero potential written all over them.

As the leader of the Wing Slayer Hunters, a supernatural species that refuses to give in to the curse that compels them to kill witches, Axel Locke faces a devastating dilemma - kill a witch or watch his sister die. In order to save her life and his soul, Axel needs the help of a witch, but the only one available, Darcy McAllister, is unaware of her identity or powers. Forced into an unlikely alliance, Darcy and Axel are in a race against time to cure a young girl and protect themselves from a demon witch's wrath.

A somewhat creative premise, but the execution is exceedingly weak with repetitive descriptions and internal musings as well as an excessive number of characters with confusing affiliations.

Much of the book is bogged down with Darcy gaining new powers and learning how to control them, which slows the pacing down to a crawl. This is exacerbated by the dense world building with various groups of characters with similar titles - demon witches, earth witches, wing slayer hunters, rogue hunters - all with their own agendas and motivations.

The romance is also unsatisfactory. Not only do Axel and Darcy have little to no chemistry, but the conflict between them, which is based on issues of secrets and distrust, is contrived and illogical.

All in all, not the most original of concepts and it has all been done to much better effect in other series. ( )

It was a pretty good read. The book held my attention. I am not too much into romantic books but there weren't so many things to have to gloss over though it did seem to get a bit hot and heavy at times towards the end of the book. If I see other books by this author, I probably will pick them up to read as I like this writer's style. ( )
