Sara Lawrence is happy to be a young widow, but her brothers insist on marrying her off again. The solution? Sara asks Nick Montrose, the notorious Earl of Bridgeton, to teach her how to ruin herself, thus rendering herself unmarriageable. Envisioning the day when the luscious Sara winds up in his bed, Nick is all too happy to oblige-but when he sees her "practicing" her lessons on other men, he′s inexplicably enraged. Then comes the day Sara′s brothers catch her and Nick in a compromising position-which leads to a speedy marriage neither wants. Can the love they don′t recognize find a way through their warring desires?… (altro)

Disappointing compared to the later St. John Series, but diverting in places.

Lady Sara Carrington is newly widowed from a husband who was a cheat. Her brothers have recently sent her to Bath to curb her wild ways. She is in search of an eligible husband who will let her do as she pleases. The Earl of Brighton, Nick Montrose, has recently returned to England to restore an estate he won in a card game and to restore his good name and reenter society after being banished.

This is romance #7 of 89. My best friend Abbi gave me 89 romances when she moved.

Not bad, not great, a thoroughly decent romance. I liked the character Nick better than Sara, though both are a bit bland. It annoyed me that Nick didn't bother to look into more information about his headache. He just assumed they would kill him eventually. I will say I was a bit more interested in the side romance of Henri and Delphi or even Anthony and Anna's than I was in Nick and Sara's. Even Nick and Sara knew they were going to end up together.

It's been bothering me in these historical romances set hundreds of years ago but written by modern authors that the heroine will demand to be an equal partner to her beloved. Back in those times, I don't think that was the way women thought about relationships. A woman might have wanted her love to be faithful to her, not to lie to her, or to be asked her opinion in matters. But the relationship as complete equals is a relatively modern thing. From the beginning of the book, Sara wanted a certain amount of freedom in her next marriage and not to be totally controlled. Okay, that's all fine. But right near the end, she starts demanding that she be a "respected partner" in the relationship. It just seems out of context each time that kind of thing pops up in these historical romances.

Above average ROM ( )
