I don't really agree with either of the two previous reviews. First, I have trouble seeing this graphic novel as a 'delightful little romp' considering it's about catching a serial killer and takes place in a brothel with all the sordidness that entails. Second, I can't help but think if one is 'alienated' by the sexual content, then one probably shouldn't pick up a graphic novel set in a bordello.

My take is that this was a very well done exploration of the dark areas early 20th century Paris. I thought the art work was very well done and appropriate to the story. The story itself, I thought, was rather fascinating and very dark. It is not a typical mystery/thriller with everyone but the murdered living happily ever after. The characters are well outside of main-stream morality, which also makes them interesting. The story is a little melodramatic perhaps, but that seems perfectly appropriate to the time, setting, and story. I certainly don't feel the characters or story were 'commonplace'.

I think this is highly recommended to those who like noir, graphic novels, and a little risquee-ness. ( )
