Christian Montcalm was a practical man, if a destitute scoundrel, but his plan to bed and wed the delectable Miss Hetty Chipple would take care of that sticky wicket. However, there was a most intriguing obstacle to his success. Annelise Kempton desired nothing more than to come between this despicable rogue and the fortune (and virtue) of her young charge. Certainly, Annelise understood the desperation that comes from hard times, but Montcalm would fail - she would personally see to it. All that stands in her way is a man whose rakish charm could tempt a saint to sin, or consign a confirmed spinster to sleepless nights of longing - to give the devil his due.… (altro)

Historical, Regency. Ok, but nothing special. ( )

I pretty much agree with the other reviews here. The Devil's Waltz is light and humorous, a fun read with just enough spice in the form of its dark, unrepentant hero, Christian Montcalm. The heroine, Annelise Kempton, a homely spinster, is likeable and genuine. I didn't *love* the book, but it was entertaining enough - the dry wit of the prose kept things flowing and Christian is very sexy. Also the dedication to Gackt ("the most delicious 450-year-old Norwegian vampire/Japanese rockstar/Georgian rake alive today") is awesome – maybe my favorite part of the book : ) I wonder if he was an inspiration for the hero... This was a fun regency read, the two main characters Christian Montcalm and Annelise Kempton were solidly themselves and stayed so throughout without any real reversals in character, change happened because of experience and growth. Christian is a rake, a man with a mission to find an elegible heiress and marry her to restore his fortunes. Annelisse would marry to reverse her impoverishment but she's regarded as on the shelf, so she uses her knowledge to advantage and works as a companion, as it's not regarded as real work she isn't compromising her name or station in life by doing so. Her current charge is Hetty Chipple, the only child of Josiah Chipple, a new made man trying to get a advantageous marriage for his daughter to rid his money of it's new-minted taint.

Annelisse stands between Christian and Hetty, conflicted with her feelings towards him and unsure whether she should act on them at all.

It's a fun romp of a book, full of interesting characters and situations and quite believable for the most part. I did enjoy it enough to hunt up a few more by Anne Stuart. ( )

lovely romance between the o, so seductive and rougish Christian Moncalm and the wintery spinsiterish Annelise Kempton. Christian is a rake and a poor one at that and he has to seduce an heiress. Hetty Chipple is the heiress he picks, but Annalise, the dragon lady, is her chaperone. And he can't bring himself to seduce the whiny but beautiful but boring Hetty, because Annalise so plays on his mind. I liked them both and was happy to spend time with them. Had a silly villian at the end, b ut you weren't reading the book for the plot twists but for the joy of watching these 2 fall in love, much against their own better wisdom. ( )
