Some good bits here, but lots of filler. Plus there's loads of stuff that never gets followed up as far as I can tell. Strange considering how much extra GW have wrung out of the HH, so many crap novels about nothing, whereas here is a subplot that could have been developed and wasn't. A direct sequel to Descent Of Angels, this one pulls the early discovery of Caliban and Primarch Jonson much further into the Horus Heresy saga. One faction of the Dark Angels is returned to Caliban while Primarch Jonson and other Angels travel to Diamat to protect the outpost from coming under Horus' control, a pivotal move in gaining an upper hand in the massive civil war brewing. Librarian Zahariel and those banished to Caliban discover the makings of their own planet-wide civil war, which threatens to unleash Chaos and completely destroy their home world. The trick to enjoying this book is being able to bounce back and forth between the battles on Caliban and Diamat and keeping all the details straight. Both theaters are remarkably similar in their unfolding destruction, but it is these parallels that make this such a good read. ( )

Much better than Decent of Angels, the story was well put together and the various characters were shown to have believable flaws as opposed to randomly making treasonous decisions out of nowhere. The main two characters were done very well, as in the last book, but what was done even better was the fact that both had their personalities fleshed out. The perspective also shifted between the two, allowing the reader to see the parallels between them and their differences better. I loved the contrast between the two, and look forward to the next book dealing with them. The ending was also very enjoyable, and did a great job setting up the next story of the conflict. ( )

If you liked the "Descent of Angels" installment then you should like this story as part of the book takes you back to Caliban and tells the story of what happened to Luther and Zaharial after being banished from the crusade and the rest of the Dark Angles, as the rest of the story tells of what Primarch Lion El' Johnson and Nemiel do to try and thwart Horus's plans after learning of his betrayal ( )
