At the time this book was written, Irving was attache of the U.S. government in Madrid, and because of his skill in Spanish, he was asked to translate Navarrete's "Voyages of Columbus" into English. Irving, a skilled author in his own right, soon tired of translating another man's work and embarked on his own history of Columbus. Through his position, he had access to the Spanish government archives, the Royal Library in Madrid, the Jesuit's Library in the College of St Isidore and to numerous private collections of books and documents. Irving was thus able to construct a most interesting story of Columbus' vicissitudes remarkable for its readability, vividness of description and historical accuracy. New knowledge about Columbus and the voyages has altered the picture somewhat, but has not diminished the lustre of Irving's work. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
