The political and social changes in South Africa since the early nineties have had a profound and unexpected effect on culture and on peopleAs identities. Mass media, art and other forms of aesthetic expression have both reflected and mediated these changes. Shifting Selves explores the possibilities for new forms of identity, solidarity, and cultural creativity that have opened up in the process. It also interrogates the limits of these forms. It looks at the new ways in which the media operates and art is currently being produced in South Africa, and what the implications are for the culture, e.g.: What roles have the media and art played in shaping change?
