Inventive and bizarre early stories from the author of the great Ferdydurke. Vaguely Gogolian in their unkempt, satirical way, some of these seem to be genre parodies - detective story, adventure story, nautical yarn - while others, like the twisted Dinner at Countess Pavahoke's read like Swiftian social commentary. My favourites were the absurd Jules Verne parody Adventures and The Events on the Banbury which comes off as a psychedelic Arthur Gordon Pym. I also loved A Premeditated Crime, in which an obsessive police inspector is determined to see a crime where none exists.
Gombrowicz regularly toys with the elasticity of realism, stretching it as far as it will go before snapping it back. He grounded these twelve tales in reality, yes, but it’s the same freedom-is-slavery reality of post-WWI Eastern Europe that led to the rise of fascism. A közép-kelet-európai televény szülötte - no most tudni kell, Közép-Kelet-Európában a realisták is abszurdot írnak, mert a politikai-társadalmi viszonyok eleve képtelen alakzatokat tudnak ölteni.
(Mondhatni: sajnos.) Ápoljuk hát a kapcsolatot vele. ( )
