The story of Enigma and the breaking of the seemingly impregnable German codes during World War 2 is a fascinating one. After World War 1, the German admirals were shocked to discover that the Royal Navy had penetrated their secret radio codes. Confronted with this fact, the postwar German navy determined that such a penetration would never occur again. The result was the famous and at that time highly secret Enigma machine. Shortly after World War I and the dissolution of the Imperial German Navy, the newly formed Reichsmarine started looking around for increasingly secure methods of transmitting vital messages and by the time World War 2 started, all of the German armed forces had adopted an electric code-writing machine known as Enigma. By the time the war ended, there were some 40,000 of these coding machines in use, many of them with slightly different modifications and each type with its own specific name.
