alfred north whitehead, modes of thought (the free press, 1968/2013): série de palestras que no conjunto estabelecem uma introdução às preocupações e temas do autor. pelo que entendi: importância (e sua ênfase na construção do universal e no dispensar detalhes) e interesse (e sua ênfase na construção do individual, na seleção dos objetos), expressão (e a afirmação do individual), corpo (como campo primário da expressão dos seres e área de sensações vagas, como área não negligenciável filosoficamente), o homem (e sua ênfase na novidade), o entendimento (a partir da conexividade da existência), filosofia (como a crítica das abstrações que dominam certos modos de pensamento), perspectiva (articulada pelas noções de interesse e importância), interdependência entre atualidade e potencialidade, história (como construtora da essência do universo), o combate à noção de tautologia (6=6, sendo uma combinação especial de 6 resultando em 6 como dado para processamento futuro), existência como fundada na noção de processo, natureza (o mundo interpretado com base em experiências sensoriais), ciência (e a consequente necessidade de afunilamento do entendimento, de redução do campo dos possíveis), racionalização (criação e reconhecimento de conexões entre detalhes), verdade (e sua existência em relação ao mundo e aos modos de pensamento), objetivo (como a exclusão da profusão de campos de possíveis), vida, processo, data, assunto/questão.

The nature of any type of existence can only be explained by reference to its implication in creative activity, essentially involving three factors: namely, data, process with its form relevant to these data, and issue into datum for further process – data, process, issue. (93)

o estilo usa muito palavras com uma entonação que eu chamaria de vovô (talvez lembre-me meu avô?), com uso extensivo de “enjoynment”. o texto pode ser lido aqui. um trecho misterioso, que não compreendo:

Another consequence is that actuality is in its essence composition. Power is the compulsion of composition. Every other type of composition is a halfway stage in the attainment of actuality. The final actuality has the unity of power. The essence of power is the drive towards aesthetic worth for its own sake. All power is a derivative from this fact of composition attaining worht for itself. There is no other fact. Power and importance are aspects of this fact. It constitutues the drive of the universe. For the reader looking for a way into the thought of Alfred North Whitehead, this short volume is the best place to begin. In six lectures delivered toward the end of his career, Whitehead provides a non-technical sketch of the metaphysics and cosmology he had earlier presented in extended and highly technical form in his magnum opus, Process and Reality.
Modes of Thought is not an easy book--for it is highly compressed and sometimes reads like a series of aphorisms. But while this book will likely leave most readers wondering how all these aphorisms hold together, they are individually nearly crystaline in clarity and are wonderfully provocative. Even if one never reads further in Whitehead, engaging this short volume will set one pondering productively. And, if nothing else, one will come away armed with some wonderful philosophical one-liners.

If reading Modes of Thought makes one want to read on, the good way to proceed would be to read Science and the Modern World next followed by Adventures of Ideas and then (and only then) Process and Reality. ( )
