In Art: A New History, Paul Johnson turns his great gifts as a world historian to a subject that has enthralled him all his life: the history of art. This narrative account, from the earliest cave paintings up to the present day, has new things to say about almost every period of art. "Art, a new history " is een plezier om te lezen. Duidelijk blijkt dat Johnson in de eerste plaats schrijver is. Johnson weet als historicus ook veel te vertellen over de relatie tussen kunst en geschiedenis. Jammer is dat hij veel kunstwerken bespreekt zonder een illustratie bij te geven. Als je maar een boek over kunstgeschiedenis wilt lezen dan ben je beter af met het boek van Honour en Fleming met veel meer illustraties. Niettemin als extra boek warm aanbevolen. ( )
