THE NEXT CHAPTER IN THE EXTRAORDINARY HISTORY OF THE STAR WARS GALAXY BEGINS HERE. . . .

After a violent civil war and the devastation wrought by the now-fallen Darth Caedus, the Galactic Alliance is in crisis--and in need. From all corners, politicians, power brokers, and military leaders converge on Coruscant for a crucial summit to restore order, negotiate differences, and determine the future of their unified worlds. But even more critical, and far more uncertain, is the future of the Jedi.

In a shocking move, Chief of State Natasi Daala orders the arrest of Luke Skywalker for failing to prevent Jacen Solo's turn to the dark side and his subsequent reign of terror as a Sith Lord. But it's only the first blow in an anti-Jedi backlash fueled by a hostile government and suspicious public. When Jedi Knight Valin Horn, scion of a politically influential family, suffers a mysterious psychotic break and becomes a dangerous fugitive, the Jedi become the target of a media-driven witch hunt. Facing conviction on the damning charges, Luke must strike a bargain with the calculating Daala: his freedom in exchange for his exile from Coruscant and from the Jedi Order.

Though forbidden to intervene in Jedi affairs, Luke is determined to keep history from being repeated. With his son, Ben, at his side, Luke sets out to unravel the shocking truth behind Jacen Solo's corruption and downfall. But the secrets he uncovers among the enigmatic Force mystics of the distant world Dorin may bring his quest--and life as he knows it--to a sudden end. And all the while, another Jedi Knight, consumed by the same madness as Valin Horn, is headed for Coruscant on a fearsome mission that could doom the Jedi Order . . . and devastate the entire galaxy.

Features a bonus section following the novel that includes a primer on the Star Wars expanded universe, and over half a dozen excerpts from some of the most popular Star Wars books of the last thirty years!

I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. There was still a sense of urgency and foreboding as is normal of the Star Wars universe, but it was also light-hearted. It was also nice to see the whole anti-Jedi feelings that had been hanging around for quite a long time finally coming to fruitation and causing long term issues for the Jedi.

Then there was the chance to see Luke and Ben together. Mara will always be my favorite character but due to the massive events of the previous novels we rarely got to see Luke and Ben together, their relationship is brilliant to read and very amusing at times. I loved the witty banter, and especially the scene where Ben starts singing an ewok song to Luke :D ( )

the next Star Wars storyline. Jedi seem to be going rogue; going insane and gaining new, unknown talents. Luke is exiled from Coruscant by Daala and the GA, as a means for the GA to try to take control of the Jedi Order. Luke, along with Ben, are trying to follow Jacen's journeys to see if they can find out where he went bad so as to prevent it happening again.

I enjoyed this. Best Star Wars in a while... ( )

I've been trying to get back into my Star Wars reading for some time now. This appears to have been a good place to pick things back up, a well-written tale in the classic Star Wars sense. The main plot centers around Luke's arrest for negligence in Jacen Solo's turn to the dark side. Luke then negotiates a self-imposed exile while secretly traveling to other worlds to investigate what caused Jacen to go bad. Other side tales, but somewhat loosely related, follow Han and Leia on a journey to Kessel to help Lando investigate the cause of earthquakes there. Jaina sets out to capture another Jedi who has fallen to an affliction that makes everyone appear "switched" with an imposter who looks like them (Body Snatchers reference?). Jaina and the Jedi wonder if examining this person will reveal clues about Jacen as well.

The book flows really well, bringing a sense of urgency along side already famous characters. This is the first of the Fate Of The Jedi series, so I am looking forward to moving on to other books in this series. ( )

I really liked this book. I will say however that, unlike me, you should probably be at least passingly familiar with the whole Jacen Solo arc of previous books. I went into the book cold, without knowing anything. The books assumes you know who all these people are, what their relationship is to each other and the backstories involved.

Despite that, I still found myself really involved in the storylines of each person, and it kept me engaged until the end.

I had a fun time with it so four stars it is! ( )

I am not positive how I feel about Outcast. I am not sure if I liked Aaron Allston's writing style. I know there was a lot that needed setting up for the Fate of the Jedi series, and he got the job done which, to me, shows extreme talent.

There is plenty of action, and while I enjoyed the portions of the book dealing with Luke and Ben, and Han and Leia best, some of the other story lines were nearly as equally as intriguing. Nearly.

However, I am anxious to begin Omen, the next in the series.

Analysts cast the Jedi Order in the guise of ungoverned, unprincipled superhumans content to gratify themselves whatever the cost might be to the common population - every Jedi a potential Jason Solo.

Because [Jedi] are trained to see into people's hearts, sort truth from lies, see into the future where the criminal has reformed...they can decide who should be thanked and who should be cut down, who should be forgiven and who should be left for the ordinary officers of the law to convict. They protect the common citizens but do not answer to him. They do not pay for their mistakes. They obey government orders when those orders conform to their moral code and not when they don't. And that's wrong. Any other group exhibiting that degree of arrogance, that unconcern for the rule of law, would be classified as a criminal organization. That ultimately is what this case is about.

The one truth he could discern was that if the galaxy thought that the Jedi were above the law abuses were sure to spring up from that notion as toxic weeds growing rapidly from a pile of manure... A few on the fringes of the border between the light side and the dark side what discern that Kyp Durron had escaped any visible consequences... would accept Luke's assertion that Darth Vader had been redeemed, had died a Jedi instead of a Sith despite his many murders, and would not understand the true meaning of the story... To prevent this evil from growing, he [Luke] had to lose this case.
