For years I have been curious about Tabitha King and finally read one of her books. "One on One" is a great book with well defined characters and an interesting story. It is an edgy teen romance by two star highschool basketball players who seem to have nothing but basketball in common. He is a fairly straight-laced greasemonkey and she is a potsmoking freak with a shaved head and a toxic homelife. AS we experience the interplay of the teens in the school, we witness a realistic interplay of drugs, sex, graphic language and many not so pc situations. The development of our heroine, Deanie from a outcast known as "the Mutant" and our hero, Sam Styles and their unlikely relationship is well written and offers insights into the realities of our society especially in small town America. This is an adult not a YA novel. I really enjoyed it and plan on reading more Tabitha King somewhere in my pile of must reads, which include many of her hubby's (my favorite author) books. ( )

I don't know how many times I've read this book, and I never tire of it. I know Sam and Deanie like the back of my hand by now, and that should bore me, but it doesn't. It's probably the truest accounting of mismatched young love in the history of literature. It's definitely Tabitha King's finest work (and all her work is pretty fine). ( )

Most people don't know that Tabitha King, wife of author Stephen King, is also an extremely talented writer. In a style that differs totally from her husband's macabre touch, Tabitha seems to focus on character development, creating real people that live in your mind for years after your read her stories. 'One on One' is one of three books about the same family. It is by far the richest read of all. The characters are full and complex. You cannot help but become involved. it has resonance for anyone and everyone who remembers high school, who might not have fit in, who fit in almost too well, who ever felt a surprising pang of longing or ache for something or someone so unlike themselves.
